Golden Seal Root

Golden seal comes from the gold-colored root of the Golden Seal plant and has been used for several years because of its medicinal properties. Early people learned about golden seal root from the American Indians, who used it for medicine and dye.

The golden seal root contains the alkaloids, hydrastine and berberine, which are known to be able to destroy bacteria and viruses, in addition to being able to relieve inflammation and congestion. Aside from this, the golden seal root also consists of calcium, iron, manganese, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, B-complex, and many more.

People who generally suffer from hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, bleeding or blood clotting disorders should also avoid using golden seal root, most especially if a person is taking medication associated with these ailments like heparin, warfarin, etc.

Side Effects

Besides its beneficial qualities, the golden seal root also contains alkaloids, which can cause gastrointestinal distress from long-term use. There should be a break of two weeks between periods of use.

It is important never to overdose on the golden seal root, as it can be poisonous in large amounts and brings with it certain side effects. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, high blood pressure, nervousness, depression, seizures or convulsions, decreased feeling or paralysis, and even death. Hence, you should see a doctor if you experience these side effects.

In order for the golden seal root to be effective, it has to contain 8-12% alkaloids, standardized in every capsule of a golden seal supplement.
